Important components of a basketball hoop

There are different mechanisms by which any basket height can be achieved. Some of them are recommended, others not. In the past, for example, the famous broomstick was used to adjust the height of the basketball hoop, or you had to loosen any hinges at a lofty height. Here are the most common mechanisms on the market:

Telescopic pole

The multi-part stand already mentioned is meant by the telescopic rod. It can be extended like a telescopic rod and screwed and fastened with a lock. Some of these telescopic rods have a seamless, free adjustment, others provide individual notches at certain intervals. The telescopic rod is used to adjust the height of the basketball hoop, especially in inexpensive models.

Broomstick setting

The grid setting, which sets the backboard directly and is not regulated via the stand, is better. This grid setting is usually controlled with a broomstick to release the lock and bring the basket to the desired height.

Height adjustment with handle

It becomes more comfortable with a height adjustment that is operated with a handle. For this purpose, there is a second rod behind the stand with a handle. As soon as you squeeze the handle, you can shorten the length of the bar and thus adjust the height of the basketball hoop. As soon as you let go of it, the construct clicks into place and sits firmly. Because the handle is easily accessible for everyone, you no longer need a broomstick to release the lock.

Pneumatic adjustment

Such a height adjustment of the basketball hoop is pretty easy to use. It also works with one handle, but can be adjusted seamlessly and does not require any notches. As soon as the handle is released, the basket is fixed exactly at this height. Adjusting the height of the basketball hoop with a pneumatically regulated device is relatively rare in Europe, but it is not entirely unthinkable.

7. Material backboard

The material of the backboard determines the rebound behavior of the ball. That in turn decides a lot! On the one hand, that the ball bounces off in a physically predictable way and lands in the basket, as one is used to from professional systems, e.g. in school. On the other hand, that you also have a realistic opportunity to practice the rebound.

Tip: If you aim at the marked square, it is easier to hit the basket.

If the backboard is made of high quality material, a professional playing feeling can be conveyed. With bad backboards there is often the problem that the ball bounces off too strongly or too weakly and therefore cannot be compared with throwing training on indoor baskets.

Backboards are offered in many different materials. The four most common are:

  • Acrylic glass
  • Safety glass
  • Polycarbonate
  • Polyethylene / ABS

Acrylic glass / plexiglass

Acrylic glass is probably the most popular raw material for the board. Acrylic glass is an extremely heat-resistant plastic that is also known under the brand name Plexiglas. Acrylic glass has optimal return game properties, so that if the board hits the ball, it will bounce off in a physically predictable direction. At the same time, the plastic optimally absorbs the twist of the ball and converts it into a change of direction. This is particularly important for throws from a distance or free throws, in which the ball is deliberately thrown with a backward spin so that it falls into the basket when the backboard hits it. Lay-ups that are released with a lateral rotation also need a decent material like acrylic glass.

Safety glass

If quality and performance are high on the priority list when buying a basketball hoop, a model with a safety glass backboard is recommended. These boards have just as good playing properties as acrylic glass, but are almost indestructible and extremely durable. That has its price: a basketball hoop with safety glass is one of the most expensive designs.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is the all-rounder among plastics. If you want to buy a basketball hoop, you will notice the wide range of such models. The baskets with a backboard made of PC usually offer a good price / performance ratio and good gaming properties. Nevertheless, polycarbonate boards are inferior to glass specimens in their ability to make the balls physically bounce off. They are usually noticeably duller and less direct in the translation of the ball rotation.

Polyethylene or ABS

Polyethylene and ABS are the cheapest materials. Boards made from these materials can be found especially in cheaper models. The material feels the dullest and ensures that the balls only bounce off weakly. This fact can be exacerbated by the use of a wobbly overall construction. Only if you want to save on the purchase of the basketball hoop should you consider models with a PE backboard.

8. Size backboard

Of course, the backboard doesn't have to be as gigantic for home use as in the NBA (183 x 110 cm), but it should be large enough to practice throws from different positions. A size that allows decent rebounds is ideal so that you can play 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 directly. A good guideline for the width of the backboard is at least 100 cm. Below 100 cm, the game is limited to simple throws, mostly from a frontal position. A basket layup, in which a corner of the drawn rectangle is aimed from the side, is already problematic with such a small basket. In addition, it can be that you have to pick up the ball every now and then if a throw goes wrong.

Conclusion

Before buying a basketball hoop, there are a lot of details to consider if you want to consider the quality. And you should definitely do that, because having fun in the game and your own safety should be in the foreground. And according to the old adage, whoever saves buys twice also applies here.

Ring and bar: If possible, do without the very thin, inexpensive models. You will not enjoy this for very long. Check the welds, especially the seam between the basketball ring and the bracket, as it is vulnerable. We recommend a basketball hoop with a ring at least 19 mm thick and a spring-back system.

Backboard: the backboard should be at least 100 cm wide so that you can play in a variety of ways. The material of the board also plays an important role, so make sure that the backboard quality is good.

Height: It is always recommended to choose a height-adjustable basketball hoop. Height-adjustable basketball stands "grow" with the children. So it's a long-term investment. It should be possible to set the basketball system at the official height of 3.05 m.

Portable basketball system: A great advantage of basketball systems with a stand is that they are mobile and can be moved or repositioned. However, they are not as stable as InGround systems. The foot should be big enough and fill with enough sand or water for a secure footing.

InGround basketball system: These are all characterized by high stability and quality. So you can rely on many years of fun. And what many do not know at first glance. These systems are also mobile! The attachment in the floor can be purchased at any time, reinserted and the basket re-assembled. The so-called “anchor kit” is a standardized component and is therefore not restricted to a single location or to be attached once.
