The well-known Apple leaker Jon Prosser has received a new insider tip: It's about the foldable iPhone, which has been the subject of much speculation in recent months. In contrast to the competition, Apple is apparently trying to go a different way when it comes to folding smartphones.

As early as December 2020, the well-known Apple leaker Jon Prosser announced in one of his YouTube videos that Apple was currently testing two prototypes for foldable smartphones. Apple has not reinvented the wheel, the folding mechanisms of the two prototypes are said to be similar to those of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip.

The Galaxy Z Fold is unfolded or folded like a book, so that when opened it takes on dimensions similar to a small tablet. When folded, it is about the size of a TV remote control or landline phone. The Galaxy Z Flip reminiscent of an old clamshell cell phone, which is as big as a normal smartphone when unfolded, when folded it is space-saving and fits in any trouser pocket.

As we reported earlier this year, Apple's prototypes have passed the durability test of the supplier Foxconn. Then the question arose: which model will Apple choose?

iPhone Fold or iPhone Flip? Apple made a decision

As Prosser reveals in his latest video, Apple has opted for a mechanism similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - and is therefore naming the potential foldable Apple smartphone "iPhone Flip". His sources do not know exactly why Apple made this decision, but Prosser suspects that the decision was made after evaluating the top secret test results at Foxconn. Prosser sees another explanation in the partnership between Apple and Samsung - after all, Samsung would manufacture the displays for a potential iPhone Flip.

Prosser gets an insider tip: What Apple does differently than Samsung and Huawei

Foldable smartphones are nothing new - even if they are far from being suitable for the masses. With the Galaxy Z Fold, Z Fold 2, Z Flip and the Huawei Mate X, Mate XS and the newly leaked Mate X2, Apple's biggest competition already has several generations of foldable smartphones on the market.

Other manufacturers have also tried out foldable smartphones more or less successfully. Above all, the price is currently deterring users from making a purchase. Foldable smartphones are still quite expensive, and manufacturers also had to struggle with some teething troubles in the initial phase - and even in 2021, foldable smartphones are still far from perfect.

A secret source from Prossers thinks he knows that Apple wants to break new ground in this regard. The iPhone Flip should appear in different colors. Prosser himself describes them as "Fun Colors", that is, color variants that we already know from the cheaper models such as the iPhone 5C, iPhone XR or iPhone 12 and 12 Mini. While Samsung and Huawei market foldable smartphones as an absolute luxury model with a corresponding noble look, the colorful selection of iPhone flip models suggests that Apple will at least not necessarily offer the foldable iPhone more expensive than an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple seems to want to appeal to the general public.

iPhone Flip won't come in 2022

However, the iPhone Flip will not be cheap, Prosser is certain of that. At the same time, the Apple leaker is taking the wind out of the sails of the media that had announced a release of a foldable iPhone for 2022. The iPhone Flip is guaranteed not to come next year. Prosser cannot say when exactly.
