What is the trap sound
The sound of the hourTrap - come over in the Cases
Sluggish beats, raps over bitches and drug deals and voices that imitate everything from animal noises to moans to gun shots - why Trap is conquering the pop world from Atlanta.
We have to talk about trends. Not about New York Fashion Week, it's over, but about music trends. We are talking about trap. For example, there is "Bad and Boujee" by Migos. A huge hit in the USA. The song has been streamed over 400 million times since it came out in October 2016.
The first wave of trap came about in the late 90s and early 00s, explains our reporter Anke van de Weyer. At the moment the sound is getting huge again. Also through Rae Sremmurd, whose "Black Beatles" you may know thanks to the Mannequin Challenge. "Black Beatles" by Rae Sremmurd was an incredible hit, especially in the USA. Trap is now so successful that even superstars like Rihanna let themselves be written Trap-influenced songs because it is the sound of the hour at the moment.
Trap is the colloquial term for the drug transhipment point, i.e. the place where the deals are made. The direct translation of trap is also "trap". So it's about being stuck in a milieu, says Anke van de Weyer. This refers to the scene in which Trap originated - the drug scene in the southern states, especially in Atlanta. And that's what the lyrics are all about - bitches, hoes, drugs, weapons and designer stuff. Or in other words: the model gangster life. In addition, there are a lot of slang and scene expressions that cannot be understood outside of Atlanta without the Urban Dictionary. Most of the acts that are currently successful have of course left this scene behind them long ago or never got to know it. But the lifestyle is still selling well.
The sound of Trap is about a basic tempo that is rather slow and sluggish. Many trap beats are created with the Roland TR 808, a legendary drum machine. It is important that the bass presses really well and that the hi hats, i.e. the highs, are jagged at the same time. This creates this very dark sound. The so-called adlibs are still very striking. These are noises that are created not by instruments but by speech. It can be groans, imitation animal noises, pistol shots - actually anything.
The combination of sluggish beats and jagged raps, which are often doubled again and then also put the Adlibs on top, creates a mood that is both gloomy and over-the-top. Music that fits in a strip club. It fits in with the fact that some of the trap greats are supposedly really trying out their new tracks in an Atlanta strip club. The listener almost feels like himself on a drug trip. And not only in the US, trap is a huge thing. Haiyti is a rapper from Hamburg who also plays with the typical trap clichés: Gosse vs. big money - and Haiyti is the coolest - just like the guys from Atlanta.
