Is favicon important for a website
Favicon - a small symbol image that should not be missing on any website
What is a favicon?
A favicon is a small symbol that appears in the browser next to the title of your website; it is usually a thumbnail of the logo. It helps visitors to recognize your website at first glance. Originally, it was intended to provide a better overview of the websites that were saved as bookmarks. You can see it above the browser address bar in the open page tabs, bookmarks, in the browser history and in the search results of various online search engines.
The favicon is therefore an important, graphic element of the website that increases the recognition value and user-friendliness of your website and ensures clarity. A favicon is usually 16x16 pixels in size.
A distinctive favicon increases the recognition value of your website
In modern browsers, searches on the Internet are organized using browser tabs, so it can happen that a few dozen different tabs accumulate in an open window. Favicons then serve as a visual guide and ensure that you can switch quickly and precisely between the websites that are currently open. When you look at your browsing history, the most popular browsers show the address and the title of the page as well as a favicon. The same goes for the bookmarks bar.
The favicon is also important for SEO - it is used by search engines
The favicons are rated positively by search engines and contribute to search engine optimization (SEO). The favicons are currently not displayed in the search results (SERP) of Google, but many other search engines consider them even more, for example the increasingly popular "DuckDuckgo.com".
How to embed a favicon in Wordpress
The easiest way - via the WordPress backend, directly in the WP settings
You can find these settings under: “Design” »“ Customizer ”, select the upper menu item“ Website information ”, upload e.g. a PNG file of your favicon, save and publish the settings. The recommended image size is 512 × 512 pixels. If the favicon does not appear in the window tab immediately, clear your browser cache so that the website reloads.
The safest way - via the code link in the Header.php
Most browsers automatically recognize the favicons from the source folder of the website if they are in .ICO format. But in addition to .ICO you can also use a .GIF or .PNG format and use an individual file name. You would then have to link the other format file in the code in the “header.php” file.
First upload your favicon via FTP access to the main directory of your Wordpress installation (the same directory where your “wp-admin” and “wp-content” folders are located). You can use an FTP program such as Total Commander, FileZilla or our Online FTP Manager use. In the "header.php" file you only have to insert the following code between the head lines:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/favicon.ico" />
Make sure that you have entered both the path and the file name correctly. To edit the “header.php” file, you can also use the WordPress editor and make the change directly via the dashboard. You can find this option in the dashboard under: “Design” »“ Editor ”and then select the appropriate file (header.php).
How do you create a favicon?
In principle, the favicon can be created with any image editing program, e.g. GIMP or Photoshop. It is important that it is then available in .ico format with a resolution of 16 × 16 pixels, then most browsers will automatically detect it. You can use one of the numerous free favicon generators to convert the file. You simply upload your own graphic or logo and have a finished .ico file generated from it.
The ideal basis for a favicon is a logo in PNG or JPEG format. Because the logo in particular is an important element of the corporate identity and is noticed by your visitors. Whether it is a company website, an online shop or a blog, a finished logo is usually already available and you can use that for your favicon.
The standard dimensions of a favicon are 16 × 16 pixels, but many generators create a number of different other sizes at the same time. Because this is very important due to the large number of different devices and systems. They are actively used, for example, in mobile applications. The good news is that it means practically no extra work for you.
