Every aspect of our private life, the world of work and society has undergone radical and extensive changes. New technologies bring us simplification. They bring a significant increase in the quality of life. At the same time, they are noticeably fading into the background, seem normal and natural to us. Precisely because they now form the all-encompassing basis for modern coexistence.

Digital technologies have made enormous leaps in development possible for society. The internet - and all innovations connected with it - certainly represents the most dramatic break. It allows us to communicate with one another across the globe. It is a gigantic repository of information and a place of exchange. It offers the opportunity to tackle the problems and challenges of our time from all corners of the world.

Healthcare Technology - Help or Obstacle?

A perfectly obvious example: Covid-19. An incredible number of people are working to fight the pandemic. The web allows them to share their progress directly with one another. The AI ​​simplifies access enormously, makes patterns recognizable and thus brings important findings to light more quickly (LINK 1). In other areas, too, such as cancer research (LINK 2), AI is increasingly being used to detect diseases earlier and treat them more effectively. With the help of apps, it is becoming ever more reliable to obtain information about the state of health of people. Projects like the Corona Warn-App also help to slow down the spread of the virus. Teams from the 42 network are involved in the development of an AI that analyzes and classifies all available scientific data on Covid-19 (LINK 3).

But there are also plenty of examples elsewhere. Digital technology opens up new possibilities for environmental protection and in the fight against climate change (LINK 4). Smart applications calculate the most efficient consumption of energy, both in business and in the private sector. Self-driving and networked cars will reduce traffic in cities in a few years and make it more effective. And also noticeably reduce the number of accidents.

The use of VR and AR enables individualized learning opportunities and support. In addition, knowledge and culture are accessible to us to a previously unknown extent. That brings us closer together. Direct communication increases the understanding of diversity and different realities of life - even if it takes place virtually and you never meet in real life.

Be part of the solution, be part of the code

And underneath it all lies code. It is the basis of all these breathtaking developments and is also accelerating itself. We are already experimenting with “writing” code with the help of machine learning without having to speak the language in detail. What is certain is that technical progress will continue. But that also means taking a closer look. Because without ethics, social progress is not possible. Every new technology, in addition to its obvious benefits, also brings with it new questions. It is important to understand the responsibility that lies in programming.

It is also worth taking a look at the source: Technology devours huge amounts of energy. Good code will therefore not only ensure that they are used efficiently, it must itself be lean, efficient and economical. Good code will ensure that access to knowledge and information is non-discriminatory. Good code will also ensure data security to ensure open and repression-free communication.

The demands that the future will place on the development of technology will be diverse and specialized.
