Tetris, Minecraft & Co .: The 7 best-selling video games

The video game era began in the mid-80s - and the boom continues to this day. Several hundred million games for game consoles, PCs and smartphones are sold every year. But which game went over the (virtual) counter most often?

Finding the number one among video games was the task of the data experts of the statistics portal “Statista” in November 2019. In their ranking, they took into account that some games run on multiple platforms and are also available for download. In the end, the seven best-selling video games worldwide were:

1. Minecraft: 180 million

Minecraft is an open world game from 2011 that gives the user the opportunity to let off steam creatively in an infinite world made of building blocks. The player can use blocks to build constructions, collect resources and fight against monsters. However, there is no set goal. Even without the prospect of winning the game, Minecraft is said to have sold 180 million times - and is thus at the top of these charts.

2. Tetris: 170 million

The first Tetris version appeared in 1984. The video game is said to have sold at least 170 million times across platforms. There are even estimates that are in excess of 450 million. Tetris is a puzzle game with seven different pieces. These should be layered on top of each other so that they form horizontal rows with as few gaps as possible at the bottom.

3. Grand Theft Auto V: 115 million

The action-adventure game Grand Theft Auto V has only been on the market since 2013, but is said to have been sold over 115 million times during this time. The player can switch back and forth between three criminal protagonists and carry out a series of dangerous heists in the fantasy city of Los Santos. The game is only released from the age of 18.

4. Wii Sports: 83 million

Wii Sports is a simulation of various sports games. It was launched in 2006 exclusively for Nintendo's Wii console and has reportedly sold around 83 million times so far. The difference to other video games: The players do not control the game while sitting on the couch. With the controller in hand, you move exactly as you want your character on the screen to do. So in boxing you box and in bowling an imaginary ball is thrown. The special thing about it: No other game has been sold as often for a single console.

5. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: 50 million

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) came onto the market at the end of 2017. In the comparatively short time since its launch, the multiplayer shooter has apparently been sold over 50 million times. At PUBG, 100 players land on an island. There can only be one survivor, so it's everyone against everyone.

6. Super Mario Bros .: 48 million

Super Mario Bros. is said to have sold almost 50 million times since 1985. It is a jump 'n' run video game. The player takes on the role of the plumber Mario, who has to overcome obstacles and defeat opponents. The game principle and the design of the game sections were defining for the jump-’n’-run genre.

7. Pokémon Red / Blue / Green / Yellow: 48 million

The very first Pokémon game came out in 1996. The four versions of the first generation (Red / Blue / Green / Yellow) are said to have sold almost 50 million times.
